Would you recommend Isiris α to other healthcare professionals?
“I would definitely recommend Isiris α to other professionals to use. It is a very simple system to use. Obviously, there is some training involved but running the clinics, on a personal level, gives me some job satisfaction and I have obviously developed my role. From a patient perspective, again you know all the benefits that we have talked about : the wait times are improved, the experience is improved definitely.”
What difference has Isiris α made to your service?
“Isiris α made an enormous positive impact to our service. The pathway for the patients now is that they are immediately referred for stent removal post surgery, put on the waiting list, and usually seen within four to six weeks. They come to the unit (the day case unit) on the day of stent removal. They do not go to the OR (operating room), they stay with us. They are seen by myself or Mr Muthusamy and are consented for the procedure.
We explain the procedure to them and they are given prophylactic antibiotics. The stent is removed. They pass urine once and then go home. Financially.
It has positive effects on the department as well it is cheaper for me.
It is more financially astute to have me do it rather than a consultant. My role has expanded. All round, it is positive. Recently, we have had actually our consultant surgeons ask to borrow the Isiris α system in theatre because it was quicker and more efficient for them to do so on the day.”
What would you say to someone considering Isiris α?
“For anyone who is thinking about moving to Isiris α, the reasons are obvious from what we have learned over the last three years. It makes it simpler, the pathway becomes much more easy and flexible which means much less burden on the services so your theatre services are not hampered as much. You do not have to have a number of personnel involved in organising this which means that it is more streamlined. And if you are able to train a nurse to deliver this as a specialist, that makes them an integral part of a team which you did not have before. Patients will love it because it is much more easy for them to go to a side room in a day unit rather than to go into a very alien looking foreign operating theatre awake and have a procedure done with about half a dozen people or more sometimes looking at them.”
How do you work with the procurement department in procuring Isiris α?
“In order to introduce Isiris α, we had to show our procurement department that the income gained by freeing up slots in endoscopy to allow our two-week wait haematuria patients to be seen was greater than the cost of purchasing the Isiris α device. As this was the case, we were allowed to introduce the Isiris α device and this was done over two years ago. And certainly procurement and ourselves have been very happy with the outcome of this.”
What are the benefits of using the single use DJ stent removal solution?
“Because the Isiris α stent removal equipment is one use only, it is disposable. This means that more procedures can take place. So, rather than having to wait for materials to be autoclaved and go through the sterilisation process, we can just move from one stent removal to the next. This has certainly improved the number and increased the number of transplant stent removals that can take place in any given morning.”
