What has been the impact of adopting Isiris α on your service/trust?
“I think the main impact that Isiris has had is for patients. I think it benefits them in so many ways :
- – Waiting times without doubt are probably the most important thing from a patient perspective. The sooner they can get their stent out, the quicker they can get on with their life.
- – My practice has become more independent which gives better job satisfaction. Just the whole pathway is much more smooth, the experience is much nicer, patient satisfaction and feedback has been very good to date. Generally all round it is a much improved experience.”
How long does a stent remain in place?
“Stents usually stay in place between one week to three weeks maximumpost-surgery. They are not very comfortable things for patients. So ideally, the quicker we can get them out, the better.”
What was your previous patient pathway for stent removal?
“Patients used to be seen in our endoscopy unit. It made it quite difficult because, although we were based within the endoscopy unit, appointments were booked by the endoscopy unit, which is a completely separate unit to urology. So there was no idea, no control over how/when appointments were booked. They were generally seen in the cancer diagnostic and follow-up clinics with very little control or room for flexibility with appointments for patients.”
What pressures did this place on the partners or trust?
“I think the main one was taking appointments away from those cancer diagnostic and follow-up patients who were waiting weeks for stent removals. It is difficult to say how long people were waiting. I did get numerous phone calls from patients asking if they could be removed sooner, with all those associated symptoms that people have but being in a completely separate unit, there was no control over about bringing these appointments forward or changing them for patients. It was quite difficult really.”
What difference has Isiris α made to your service?
“I think using the Isiris α system on a day-to-day basis has had several positive impacts:
– Wait times have definitely improved
– Flexibility of appointments has improved
– Flexibility of use where it can be done has improved
– I think it also frees time for other team members to be doing other work as well.
Since using the Isiris α system, wait times have improved significantly. We have removed just under 400 stents to date and we have looked and it is showing that pre-Isiris α use there was a 30% rate of stents being removed on time, which has now increased to 73% now that we are using the Isiris α system.”
What made you consider Isiris α?
“With the development of the Isiris α system, we just felt that as a department and within the team it would help improve wait times and pathways for patients. It allows you to do that with the flexibility of it, the fact that you do not need the whole stack equipment. It is just so very portable and flexible. You know, like I say, it can be done anywhere.”
What advice do you give to patients coming in for a stent removal?
“Prior to the procedure being done and the stent being removed, we do sit patients down. Obviously we go through the whole procedure with them, make sure they are happy, that they fully understand what is going on, what to expect afterwards and during the procedure, they obviously then sign the consent form and we go ahead with the procedure.”
Do you feel Isiris α improves the patient’s experience?
“I think there is the added benefit of seeing someone that you have highly likely seen before. When it is done in the endoscopy unit it was very often done by a doctor that the patient had not met before. I think for this kind of procedure, it is very nice if you have met that person before, it makes a big difference and I think that definitely goes a long way to reducing patients’ anxiety levels about the procedure.
I think it has 100% improved the pathway for patients.
I think they got easier access to speak to a nurse. If there are problems, we are more available for them time-wise. We have the flexibility of being able to switch appointments, bring them forward if necessary, give advice, explain where/how the procedure is done and again I think all that goes a very long way to reducing anxiety about the procedure, and without doubt, waiting times have improved, which can only be good for patients with stents.”
Would you recommend Isiris α to other healthcare professionals?
“I would definitely recommend Isiris α to other professionals to use. It is a very simple system to use. Obviously, there is some training involved but running the clinics, on a personal level, gives me some job satisfaction and I have obviously developed my role. From a patient perspective, again you know all the benefits that we have talked about : the wait times are improved, the experience is improved definitely.”
